Vacation Planning: Should I Rent a Car in Honolulu/Oahu?

Depending on your goals and interests when visiting Honolulu, you may be wondering if it’s a good idea to rent a car in Oahu during your stay.

Renting a car for a vacation in Honolulu might not be needed if you intend to spend your days on the beach close to your hotel. That said, a rental car can also make your visit to Oahu more flexible and enjoyable.

Honolulu Infrastructure

You won’t find a traditional transit grid in Honolulu, where the road conforms to the natural terrain. You’ll navigate more by determining if you’re heading toward the mountain (“mauka”) or shoreline (“makai”) than regular compass points. The roads can also be a bit on the skinny side for the same reason.

Oahu’s TheBus system is fairly accessible for local errands, but the Waikiki Trolley or a rental car may be a better bet for sightseeing.

Be sure you have a good map or up-to-date GPS to help you find your way.

Comparing Vacation Transportation Options in Honolulu

Honolulu has a walkability score of 66 out of 100. Depending on how far your errands and interests are from your lodgings, walking to some of them in less than 30 minutes could be possible. Others are better reached by another form of transportation. You may not want to depend on your trusty sneakers to get you everywhere you’d like to go.

Walk Score also gives Honolulu a transit score of 56. The area has fairly good public transportation options, with easy access.

Choose from:

If you find you need a car to get to where you want to go more than once or twice, a car rental could be a more convenient option.

TomTom.com rates Honolulu as the 11th worst city for driving. You can expect some traffic congestion (especially during peak times on major roads) and slower speed limits than you might be used to—it usually takes about 14 minutes to drive 6 miles. Prepare to navigate hilly, winding roads and keep an eye out for pedestrians.

Try to avoid rush hour and just relax and enjoy the ride. Everyone is on island time.

If you need a car in Honolulu, why not consider a rental car or ride-share option?

Bottom Line: Should You Rent a Car in Honolulu?

Are you in Honolulu to immerse yourself in the beach life? Or are you ready to explore? Depending on your goals, a rental car could be a good idea.

Consider renting a car for a vacation in Honolulu if:

  • You plan to explore multiple areas and popular destinations on the island.
  • You have mobility needs or health restrictions.
  • You have limited time and lots to see.
  • You want to feel more in control of your own schedule and whims.
  • You want to experience city life and spend plenty of time with sand between your toes.

Budget has great options for cruising in town and along the shoreline. Book an economy car or convertible at one of our Oahu locations, including the Budget rental counter at Honolulu International Airport (HNL).
