Things to Do in Sacramento

Sacramento is a big, bustling city with plenty of things for everyone to do. Here are just a few of the city’s best attractions that the whole family will enjoy.

California Automobile Museum

This attraction is a must for any car fanatic visiting Sacramento. Walk the museum’s 72,000 square feet of floor space to see a collection of over 150 classic cars, muscle cars, and even race cars that range from a 1904 Ford Model B Touring Car to a 2011 Nissan Leaf. The museum allows guests to sit in some of the classic cars for some nostalgic photo ops.

Sacramento Zoo

The Sacramento Zoo, situated in the ever-popular William Land Park, has been open for over 90 years. Although it started out small, the zoo now has more than 500 animals from around the world. Don’t miss the Small Wonders of Africa exhibit, home to aardvarks, crested guineafowl, fennec foxes, fruit bats, and red-billed hornbills. You’ll also want to see the zoo’s enclosure of playful North American river otters.

Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament

If you’re in Downtown Sacramento, make sure to visit the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, one of the largest cathedrals west of the Mississippi. This prominent Sacramento landmark was constructed in 1889, and has been part of the heart of the city ever since. Take a minute to walk around the cathedral and admire its architecture, including the 215-foot belltower, which was inspired by The Church of the Holy Trinity in Paris.

Sacramento History

Experience Sacramento’s 150+ years of history, from the Gold Rush to modern day at these historical sites.

Old Sacramento

Travel back in time and learn about Sacramento’s history through its founding during the Gold Rush, the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad, and the short-lived run of the Pony Express at Old Sacramento. This 28-acre historic district brings history alive with functioning railroad replicas, horse-drawn carriages, and museums to show you just what Sacramento was like, way back when.

Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park

Originally built in 1856, this stately 20,000-square-foot mansion was owned by Leland Stanford, governor of California during the Civil War and President of the Central Pacific Railroad. Now, the Victorian mansion is a museum, open to the public. Tour the halls to see the 17-foot ceilings, intricate woodwork and gilding, 19th-Century style gardens, and original furnishings owned by the Stanfords.

Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park

In Midtown Sacramento, you’ll find Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park, a living history museum that tells the story of the 1840s inhabitants of Sacramento: Mexican Citizens of Alta California, American and European pioneers, and Native Americans. Swiss immigrant John Sutter established the fort in 1839, and the park shows you what life would have been like for its inhabitants.
