Named for one of the most famous sons of New Orleans and supporter of the jazz tradition, Louis Armstrong, this 31-acre park sits at the edge of the French Quarter. It often hosts festivals and concerts, and on occasion is used as a filming location. Louis Armstrong Park is also home to Congo Square, a place where slaves would meet on Sundays to play music and sell or trade handmade items. You’re sure to enjoy the musical and cultural history this park has to offer.

#2. New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum

The Historic Voodoo Museum shares the story of Voodoo culture in New Orleans and the bayous of Louisiana. Established in 1972, the museum entices and intrigues visitors of all ages while they learn about voodoo queens, zombies, and folklore. Walking tours of the St. Louis Cemetery are available, which include the grave of the Queen of all Voodoo Queens, Marie Laveau. If you are interested in readings, gris-gris (talisman), or other mystical practices, the museum may be able to put you in contact with someone.

The ruins of a sugar mill that was built in 1829 are within the borders of Fontainebleau, occupying 2800 acres on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. This serene state park is wonderful for sailing, sunbathing, and camping. Campsites and cabins are available. Hiking, biking, and in-line skating can be enjoyed on Tammany Trace, where you may encounter some of the 400 species of wildlife in the state park.

#4. The Myrtles Plantation

A tour of The Myrtles Plantation is well worth a view of the architecture and interior design alone. Guided tours and private tours are available, or you can take a complimentary self-guided tour. However, this is no ordinary plantation. The walls could tell so many stories, some of them rather spooky. The Myrtles Plantation is said to be one of the most haunted homes in America. During your visit, you can learn of the “Legend of Chloe.” Myrtles is also a bed & breakfast and evening mystery tours are available on Fridays and Saturdays.

#5. Kisatchie National Forest

You can decompress with a stay in Kisatchie National Forest. Administered by the U.S. Forest Service through the Department of Agriculture, this National Forest is 604,000 acres of outdoor bliss. Because the forest is so large, with 5 different districts. We thought it might be fun to first check out the popular Wolf Rock Cave. This cave is next to a creek with a beautiful view, making for the perfect place to trek around. Learn about the history of its ancient inhabitants while visiting. There’s something for everyone in this breathtaking park.
